Luperox® 2,5-2,5,ertiary alkyl hydroperoxides are widely used as chemical intermediates and as free radical polymerization initiators. Tertiary hydroperoxides form free radicals.
Tertiary hydroperoxides undergo unimolecular homolysis when subjected to
heat or ultraviolet light.
Free radicals can induce the decomposition of additional hydroperoxide molecules by hydrogen abstraction.
Multivalent metals react with hydroperoxides by an oxidation-reduction
(redox) mechanism. The products formed are dependent on the metal involved and its valence. With metals such as iron, copper, cobalt and manganese, redox reactions occur with both the lower and higher valence
cations. Small amounts of metal will therefore decompose large quantities of hydroperoxide.
Used in epoxidation of olefins, formation of peroxyesters, decomposes in the presence of acid.
The decomposition products of tertiary alkyl hydroperoxides are dependent on the media in which the decomposition occurs and the decomposition temperature. The decomposition of pure (liquid phase) t-Butyl hydroperoxide and cumene hydroperoxide yields oxygen alcohol.
