Wetting and Dispersing Additives for
Aqueous Systems
Composition
Disperbyk Solution of an alkylammonium salt of a lower molecular weight polycarboxylic acid
polymer
Disperbyk-181 Solution of an alkylammonium salt of a polyfunctional polymer
Lactimon-WS Solution of a partially neutralized alkyl-ammonium salt of a polycarboxylic acid and a
polydimethylsiloxane
These additives do not contain alkyl phenolic ethoxylates.
Application Fields
Emulsion paints Aqueous systems Solvent-based coatings
Recommended Amounts
% additive (delivery form) based upon:
Titanium dioxide Filler Inorganic pigments
Disperbyk 1.5 – 2.5 0.8 – 1.2 5 - 10
Disperbyk-181 1.5 – 2.5 0.8 – 1.2 5 - 10
Lactimon-WS 1.5 – 2.5 0.8 – 1.2 5 - 10
The above mentioned usage levels strongly depend on pigment particle size. Optimal
levels are determined through a series of laboratory tests. For optimum
performance, the additives must be incorporated into the millbase before addition of
the pigments.
Mode of Action
These additives deflocculate pigments through electrostatic repulsion and/or steric stabilization.
Special Note
Disperbyk The water content may cause problems in epoxy and polyurethane systems.
Storage and Transport
Disperbyk At temperatures below +10°C, turbidity and separation may occur. Warm to room
temperature and mix well before use. The efficiency of the product is not influenced.
Disperbyk-181 At temperatures below +5°C, Disperbyk-181 becomes solid, therefore it is necessary to
heat the product to room temperature before incorporation. The efficiency of the
product is not influenced.
Special Properties and Advantages
Disperbyk Disperbyk is suitable for both aqueous and solvent-based systems. When added to
the millbase of a white paint, it improves colour acceptance and colour development.
In solvent-based and aqueous coatings Disperbyk prevents hard sedimentation.
Furthermore, Disperbyk improves the effectiveness of pyrogenic silica.
Disperbyk-181 Disperbyk-181 improves the storage stability (gloss, levelling) in emulsion paints, in
tinting systems the colour acceptance and colour development is increased; in
aqueous systems Disperbyk-181 is used in combination with a dispersing additive
such as BYK-156 (see Data Sheet W 10). In solvent-based systems Disperbyk-181
reduces as a wetting and dispersing additive the viscosity and increases the gloss.
Lactimon-WS Lactimon-WS is only used in aqueous systems. It deflocculates the pigments;
therefore it increases gloss, improves the levelling and prevents flooding and floating.
It contains a polysiloxane copolymer which intensifies this effect; in particular, it helps
to counteract the formation of Bénard cells and pigment striations.
