Ascinin® Special is used as an anti-skinning agent in clear and pigmented paints based on drying oils or alkyd resins. Properties Ascinin® Special is an effective antioxidant for paint systems which dry by oxidation. By combining a substituted phenol with an oxime, the advantages of the individual components are united, resulting in increased anti-skinning efficacy. In wood oil lacquers, Ascinin® Special has little effect on skinning but eliminates flow defects during film formation, resulting in smoother films as a result. Initial drying is only slightly retarded but a film-improving effect takes place which is manifestes in terms of acceleration of through-drying and increased hardness and gloss. The spreadability of paints is also increased. Applications Ascinin® Special is used in paint systems which dry by oxidation based on oils, stand oils, urethane oils, alkyd resins, etc. lt is suitable for both clear and pigmented systems and exhibits good binder compatibility. Mixing and addition rate Ascinin Special is easy to use and is simply stirred gently into the coating. Ascinin Special should always be processed cold in view of the volatility of the oxime component. lt must not be added at the same time as driers. The addition rate of Ascinin Special is dependent on the particular coating system and the desired properties. From experience, an addition rate of 1 - 2% relative to non-volatile binder has proved suitable. When using pigments which retard the drying process, the addition rate should be reduced. The lightfastness of paints is not affected by Ascinin Special. At high addition rates, a yellow tinge may appear during film formation but this completely disappears once through-hardening is complete. The optimum addition rate should be determined beforehand in trials. Anti-skinning agent in clear and pigmented paints based on drying oils or alkyd resins.
