Properties Borchers S1 is completely miscible with water, alcohols and other polar solvents. Borchers S1 is hygroscopic and may therefore absorb moisture from the air. In the event of prolonged exposure to air, Borchers S1 may react with carbon dioxide in the air (formation of carbonate). This is irrelevant if the product is handled correctly. Borchers S1 is known to stabilize the pot life behaviour of water-borne 2-component PUR paints based on polyester resins. After addition of the catalyst, a uniform viscosity is obtained within the mixing time. This is an important criterion with spray application. Gloss and the surface properties of the paint film are also improved. At the appropriate addition rate, a decrease in film hardness is unlikely to occur. Borchers S1 can be used as an accelerator in unsaturated polyester resins dissolved in styrene. Some cobalt octoate, for example, is still necessary although the required amount of cobalt can be reduced by using Borchers S1, permitting films or castings of a lighter colour. Applications Borchers S1 can be used in solvent-containing and water-borne systems. Addition rate The approximate addition rate is 0.2 - 1.0 %, relative to total formulation. The ideal addition rate has to be determined in trials for each system. Accelerator additive for unsaturated polyesters.
