Borchi® Gel L 76 1
Thickener for emulsion paints and aqueous paint systems
Description
Borchi® Gel L 76 is a polyurethanebased, non-ionogenic thickener. lt is supplied as a low-viscosity preparation in water in the form of an emulsion. lt acts as a flow promoter and improves the application properties of emulsion paints. lt also stabilises aqueous pigmented paints.
Properties
Borchi® Gel L 76 improves the rheological properties of aqueous coating systems. lt allows better and easier application of the paint with brush or roller. As a result of its beneficial effect on flow properties, Borchi® Gel L 76 has proved particularly useful in acrylic high-gloss paints and anti-corrosion paints. The thickening action may be reduced by polar, water-soluble substances, e.g. alcohols and glycols. Non-polar substances such as Texanol®, or white spirit tend to increase viscosity, on the other hand. Borchi® Gel L 76 can be combined with other thickeners.
A maturing time of at least 3 hours should be allowed before final evaluation of the thickener action.
Applications
Borchi® Gel L 76 can be used in pure acrylic, styrene acrylic and styrene butadiene emulsions. lt can also be used even in water-emulsifiable 2-component systems and in air- and stove-drying paints. The action of Borchi® Gel L 76 is unaffected by the pH of the formulation.
Mixing and addition rate
Borchi® Gel L 76 is easy to use. Because of its low intrinsic viscosity, it can also be added after mixing without predilution for adjustment of viscosity.
The recommended addition rate is 0.1 -2% by weight in the supply form relative to the formulation.
Higher addition rates are generally needed for production of gloss paints. lt should be dissolved directly in the solvent in question and added to the mill base. The exact addition rate should always be determined beforehand in trials.
