Borchi® Gen ND 3
Liquid, solvent-free dispersing agent and brightener
Description
Borchi® Gen ND is a wetting and dispersing agent for all pigmented paint systems, catalysed synthetic resins and aqueous binders.
Properties
Borchi® Gen ND exhibits good wetting and dispersant properties even at low addition rates and considerably shortens pigment milling times.
Gloss, depth of color and flow properties are improved and settling of pigments and fillers is reduced.
Good wetting efficacy is exhibited on many substrates (wood, metal, glass, plastic, etc.).
White and clear paints or lacquers with added driers are brightened, as are activated polyester condensates.
Borchi® Gen ND acts as an anti-gelling agent when basic pigments and acidic binders are used.
Applications
Borchi® Gen ND is a highly versatile wetting and dispersing agent in both solvent-containing and solvent-free paint and lacquer systems. lt is also an effective brightener in white and clear paints and lacquers dried with coloured metals.
Borchi® Gen ND is used in oil paints, alkyd paints, baking paints, reaction paints, chlorinated rubber paints, etc. with light organic and heavy inorganic pigments. In baking paints based on condensation resins, curing may be intensified at high temperatures as Borchi® Gen ND acts as a catalyst under such conditions.
Any embrittlement can be eliminated by simultaneous use of Borchi® Gen HMP.
In fine-particle acrylic dispersions, used mainly in emulsion paints, Borchi® Gen ND improves gloss and gloss stability. For this application, predilution of Borchi® Gen ND with water (25%) is advisable.
In aqueous binders, Borchi® Gen ND has a stabilising effect on the binder besides wetting the pigments. As a result, pustule formation and gelling during storage can be prevented.
Mixing and addition rate
Borchi® Gen ND is incorporated with the mill base or in a high-speed mixer. Prior preparation of Borchi® Gen ND is necessary only for aqueous systems, as already described. Subsequent addition of Borchi® Gen ND for brightening purposes or to stabilise viscosity is also possible. For use as a wetting and dispersing agent, the recommended addition rate is between 0.2 and 0.5% relative to total paint volume.
In the case of non-pigmented paints, the addition rate is 0.2 - 1.0% relative to the solid binder content. The specified concentrations result in optimum brightening in white and clear paints and lacquers and polyester condensates after a maturing time of around 72 hours. Polyester condensates with cobalt or vanadium as the accelerator require addition rates of between 0.02 and approx. 0.1% for brightening purposes. Pot-life is not prolonged at such concentrations. The specified addition rates are only approximate. Optimum addition rates must be determined beforehand in trials.
