Octa-Soligen® 173 14
Special lead-free combination drier for paint systems which dry by oxidation
Description
Octa-Soligen® 173 is a drier combination developed to satisfy the demands of the paint industry for suitable environ mentally acceptable, lead-free drier systems. Octa-Soligen® 173 and Octa-Soligen® 203 are two lead-free combination driers for the paint industry which are almost universally usable and yield optimum drying results in all binders which dry by oxidation. Octa-Soligen® 173 is of low viscosity, is easy to use and is specifically suited to light-coloured paint systems and automotive refinishing paint.
Properties
Cobalt effects rapid surface drying. In conjunction with cobalt, barium acts like lead and improves through-drying. At the same time it prevents the adsorption of primary driers, thereby increasing drier stability during long-term storage. Zirconium acts as an active auxiliary drier. Like lead, it improves both through-drying and surface drying.
The balanced ratio of the various metal contents of Octa-Soligen® 173 yields optimum results in initial drying and through-drying. As a result of the action of the barium, this drier has excellent drier stability, rendering use of additional drier stabilisers unnecessary except in the case of critical pigment Systems.
Paints incorporating Octa-Soligen® 173 are characterised by better drying times particularly at high atmospheric humidity and low temperatures.
Applications
Octa-Soligen® 173 is usable in all binder systems which dry by oxidation and is particularly suited to white and light-coloured paints. Cloudiness and precipitation do not occur.
Paint films dried with Octa-Soligen® 173 exhibit very good throughdrying, outstanding brightness, good gloss and excellent hardness.
Particularly advantageous is use of Octa-Soligen® 173 at low temperatures and high atmospheric humidity, especially if used in conjunction with Octa Soligen Cerium.
Octa-Soligen® 173 promotes faster through-drying of paints dried by application of heat. As a result, the paint remains removable with tape (e.g. in the case of automotive refinishing paints) for a shorter period.
Mixing and addition rate
Applications Development trials showed the necessary addition rates of Octa-Soligen® 173 to be between 2.0 and 5% relative to binder, depending on the binder and the pigment system. This is equivalent to a cobalt content of 0.024 to 0.06%.
When using pigments which retard the drying process such as carbon black or toluidine red, a higher addition rate or special stabilisation may be necessary. Stabiliser C, Octa-Soligen® Barium 12.5 or Octa- Soligen® Calcium 10 are all suitable for this purpose.
In paint systems which already contain zinc compounds, Octa-Soligen® 173 should be used in preference to Octa-Soligen® 203.
