Octa-Soligen® Barium 14
Description
This drier is used as a substitute for lead in the formulation of lead-free coatings. Barium improves the through-drying of a coating and has good pigment wetting properties.
In contrast to lead, barium is not a cumulative toxin although it does have a relatively high acute toxicity. This property prohibits its use in certain coating systems. During the manufacture of coatings, certain precautions must be observed in handling barium driers. It is generally assumed that coatings containing barium present no risk because of the low amounts added. However, the presence of barium along with other heavy metals and arsenic in toys, crayons, etc. is not desirable. There are legislative requirements which allow only limited use of these substances in toys and writing implements.
Properties
Barium acts as a wetting agent for pigments and extenders, improves gloss, prevents the adsorption of primary driers at the surfaces of pigments and extenders and thus increases the stability of the coating during prolonged storage. In combination with cobalt, barium - like lead - promotes through-drying in many formulations.
Addition
In our experience, the percentage addition of barium, calculated on the metal content per binder (solid), is approx. 0.1 - 0.5 % Ba.
The exact amount required depends on the binder used.

Can be used in solventborne systems based on alkyds and epoxy esters that dry by oxidation.
