It results in rapid surface drying and, in combination with a secondary drier such as zirconium, barium or lead, uniform through-drying of the paint film. Octa-Soligen® Cobalt driers are based on metal salts of 2-ethylhexanic acid (octoates) or their isomers. Supply form Octa-Soligen® driers are based on octoates or their isomers. We supply cobalt octoates with different metal contents in different solvents that meet the specific requirements of various applications: Products Applications Octa-Soligen® Co 7 Aqua Waterborne systems Octa-Soligen® Cobalt 1 (DiBP) Unsaturated polyesters Octa-Soligen® Cobalt 6 Unsaturated polyesters Octa-Soligen® Cobalt 6 (xylene) Unsaturated polyesters Octa-Soligen® Cobalt 8 (xylene) Unsaturated polyesters Octa-Soligen® Cobalt 10 (xylene) Unsaturated polyesters Octa-Soligen® Cobalt 12 (xylene) Unsaturated polyesters Octa-Soligen® Cobalt 6 Solventborne systems Octa-Soligen® Cobalt 8 Solventborne systems Octa-Soligen® Cobalt 9 Solventborne systems Octa-Soligen® Cobalt 10 Solventborne systems Octa-Soligen® Cobalt 11 Solventborne systems Octa-Soligen® Cobalt 12 Solventborne systems Octa-Soligen® VP 96108-Co 6 Iso. Octa-Soligen® Cobalt thus results in rapid surface drying. A surplus of cobalt may result in defects such as wrinkling, poor through-drying and yellowing. Applications Octa-Soligen® Cobalt is used in all oxidative systems, whether air-or force-drying. It is used in architectural paints, industrial coatings, stains, varnishes, oil-based inks and artists' colors. It can also be used as an accelerator in unsaturated polyester resins, resulting in a shorter gel time. Addition In conventional alkyd formulations, the cobalt addition is between 0.03 and 0.08 %, calculated on the solid binder. In printing inks, a combination of Octa-Soligen® Cobalt and Octa-Soligen® Manganese is recommended. The amount of cobalt is between 0.03 and 0.05 %, calculated on the solid binder. In systems based on linseed oil, the combination of Octa-Soligen® Cobalt and Octa-Soligen® Cerium yields optimum drying properties. The addition of cobalt metal is 0.02 to 0.06 %, calculated on the solid binder. Octa-Soligen® Cobalt can also be combined with Octa-Soligen® Zirconium and Octa-Soligen® Calcium. This yields outstanding results in systems that are free from heavy metals. In unsaturated polyesters, the addition of cobalt is between 0.005 and 0.02 %, calculated on the solid binder. Irrespective of these guidelines, the addition should always be determined in preliminary trials. Cobalt is the most important drier metal.
