GLASCOL LS16 is developed to function as a pigment grinding resin for water-borne inks. Further, GLASCOL LS16 may be used as a modifier resin to improve machine stability (resolubility) of water-borne inks made on more hydrophobic resins. The product may also be used as a sole binder where high solids and very good resolubility are required. GLASCOL LS16 is an aqueous emulsion based on a carboxylated acrylic copolymer. GLASCOL LS16 is a low average molecular weight polymer with highly hydrophilic properties. GLASCOL LS16 is developed to function as a pigment grinding resin for water-borne inks. The product should be used as the sole resin component of pigment grinding bases that are subsequently to be used as the basis for water-based inks using other vehicles in the let-down stage. Ciba Specialty Chemicals offers a comprehensive product range of water-based specialty resins for usage as let-down resins for water- borne inks. Incorporation and use of GLASCOL LS16 in the pigment grinding step is similar to the use of dispersing agents: It is recommended to add the pigment to heavily stirred water containing GLASCOL LS16 as opposed to addition of GLASCOL LS16 to a pigment slurry. In general, the pH of the final preparation should be in the region of 8.5 to obtain optimum dispersing efficiency. Pigment grinding bases made on GLASCOL LS16 usually exhibit good storage properties over periods of 6 months and often much longer. Some pigments show a tendency to thixotropy but the grinding bases are typically recoverable to a free flowing state on agitation. Inks made on grinding bases containing GLASCOL LS16 usually show excellent long-term stability with little tendency to increase in viscosity. Further, GLASCOL LS16 may be used as a modifier resin to improve machine stability (resolubility) of water-borne inks made on higher molecular weight and more hydrophobic resins. The product may also be used as a sole binder where high total solids and very good resolubility is required. GLASCOL LS16 demonstrates excellent viscosity/pH stability in the pH range 7.8-9.0 but becomes insoluble when the pH drops below 7.0. Aqueous emulsion based on a low average molecular weight carboxylated acrylic copolymer with highly hydrophilic properties. Used as a pigment grinding resin for water-borne inks to give high solids and very good resolubility and as a modifier resin to improve machine stability (resolubility) of water-borne inks made on more hydrophobic resins. Provides very good long-term stability and very good viscosity/pH stability.
