GLASCOL LS20 are resins developed for water-borne inks. The key benefits are:
very good clarity
good blocking resistance
very good resistance to organic and water-based materials
good pigment wetting properties
hydrophilic nature of polymer
excellent viscosity/pH stability
near linear viscosity/dilution curve
GLASCOL LS20 are aqueous microemulsions based on similar carboxylated acrylic copolymers.
GLASCOL LS20 are specialty resins designed for use in water-based inks. The main recommended applications are inks for paper/corrugated paper and plastic substrates such as polyolefines (polyethylene, polypropylene) and PVC.
Further uses of GLASCOL LS20 include over print varnishes on paper and plastic substrates.
Both products can be used as sole binders. GLASCOL LS20 forms coherent films at room temperature.
Blending both products also allows to adjust the coating hardness from
hard (mainly GLASCOL LS24) to soft (mainly GLASCOL LS20) and consequently to improve adhesion properties.
GLASCOL LS20 may also be used as modifier resins to adjust film-forming properties of inks based on high MFFT resins such as GLASCOL LE17.
In inks it is recommended that GLASCOL LS20 is used as the let-down vegicle. Optimum colour development can be achieved when using a highly hydrophilic resins as the pigment grinding vehicle. A very suitable grinding resin for this purpose is GLASCOL LS16, also offered by Ciba Specialty Chemicals.
In some cases, however, the above recommendation cannot be followed. If water resistance is to be maintained at maximum then it is possible to grind the pigment directly into GLASCOL LS20. This must be done on highly efficient dispersing equipment otherwise some loss in gloss and/or flow can occur.
The slip and abrasion resistance of formulations based on GLASCOL
LS20 may significantly be improved by addition of a wax emulsion such as GLASWAX E1.
Since GLASCOL LS20 are microemulsions, the liquid products exhibit some resilient properties which can be of importance for practical use:
e.g., improved stability against high shear stress
The products demonstrate excellent viscosity/pH stability in the pH
range 7.8-9.0 but become insoluble when the pH drops below 7.0.
