It is a highly specific and effective inhibitor of photosynthesis which can control the fouling of surfaces caused by algae. Its very low water solubility allows the formulation of coatings with very low leaching rates and therefore very long servicelife. IRGAROL 1071 is a highly specific and effective inhibitor of photosynthesis. This makes it ideal, combined with its low water solubility, for use in exterior architectural coatings to prevent the growth of algae. Growth of algae on surfaces can cause several problems including discoloration (sometimes mistaken as due to fungi) and provide a basis for fungus, moss, or lichen growth which can lead to decay of the coating and the substrate. While IRGAROL 1071 shows outstanding performance in the control of algae, it has comparatively low biological activity to animals in general, including humans. It is therefore an ideal active substance for the formulation of biocide packages with a designed performance profile, where it is combined with other active ingredients to control additional target organisms. IRGAROL 1071 is often combined with a fungicide and may be used for applications such as house paint, stucco, caulks, sealants, clear coatings (e.g. for wood), roof tiles and other cementitious materials. It is advised that water from treated surfaces should not be collected and used for any agricultural purposes or as drinking water. Recommended concentrations are highly dependant on several factors such as climate, leaching rate, and desired life time of the coating. Levels of 0.1 to 1% based on binder solids have been used. The amount of IRGAROL 1071 required for optimum performance should be determined in trials covering a concentration range. Designed biological activity of IRGAROL 1071 IRGAROL 1071 is exceptionally active towards algae, the target organism to be controlled, and is less active by a factor of typically 100 or more against animals in general. Therefore at typical use levels IRGAROL 1071 offers a large margin of safety. This makes it an environmentally acceptable and safe alternative to many other biocides. The concentration at which algae growth is reduced by 50% (EC50) is around 1µg/liter; the concentration at which no effects are observed (NOEC) is around 0.1 µg/liter. Fate of IRGAROL 1071 after release to the environment The octanol/water coefficient of IRGAROL 1071, log Pow is 2.8, which is close to the classification requirement of Directive 67/548/EEC and indicates a moderate preference of the compound to adsorb to organic substances. Laboratory studies conducted with fish demonstrated the bioconcentration maximum (BCF) to be between 60x and 240x. The observation that the bioconcentration of IRGAROL 1071 is reversible through a fast excretion, however, leads to the conclusion that IRGAROL 1051 does not bioaccumulate in the food chain. IRGAROL 1071 is classified as “not readily biodegradable”. As part of its Responsible Care program Ciba Specialty Chemicals conducted several further degradation studies. Two main degradation processes for IRGAROL 1071 were identified: microbial metabolism and photolysis. The speed of the degradation in the natural environment depends on various factors, the most important ones being temperature, the microbial activity of the environment (coating surface or soil) and presence of daylight. The results of the extended studies demonstrated that in parallel to degradation of the active substance, the biological activity to algae diminishes, irrespective to the temporary appearance of metabolites. The metabolites are therefore biologically far less active than IRGAROL 1071 itself. The half-life of the active substance and each major degradation metabolite was found to typically vary between 1 and 3 months. Further ecological and toxicological properties of IRGAROL 1071 have been extensively investigated by Ciba Specialty Chemicals and also by independent parties.
