Properties DEHYDRAN G can be used in coatings either to
prevent the formation of foam or bubbles during the
manufacture and application of the paint (by brush or
roller), or to eliminate foam which has developed in
the manufacturing process. This may be required
e.g. when the formulation or production method have
changed.
Dosage DEHYDRAN G can be incorporated at any stage of
the production. They are generally added in
undiluted form. If necessary, emulsions can be
prepared by adding two parts of water to one part of
DEHYDRAN G but if further water is added, the
emulsions will break.
To suppress foam during polymerization the
defoamer should be added gradually. Continous
addition ensures sufficient defoaming effect at any
moment. If the total defoamer quantity were added
at one time this effect would not be certain due to
the influence the emerging polymer particles have on
the defoamer. A particularly good effect is obtained
when the defoamer is added by spraying. This
method of incorporation enables the defoamer to
display its spontaneous defoaming properties most
effectively.

The amount required lies between 0.1 and 0.75%,
calculated on the finished batch, depending on the
foam intensity and the composition of the polymer
emulsion or the paint. The amount giving optimum
performance will of course differ from formulation to
formulation and should be determined by
appropriate tests in each case. This is particularly
recommended when using defoamers containing
silicone oil, as these types, though showing an
excellent performance, may - if overdosed - cause
film defects under certain circumstances.
