Application Wood and furniture coatings based on nitrocellulose,
as well as acid-curing one and two-component
finishes; paper varnishes, leather finishes.
EDENOL® BS 20 N ensures a very fast solvent
release, as well as an improvement in sanding and
stacking properties. It also improves the «surface
touch» and scratch resistance.
Nitrocellulose Lacquers
EDENOL® BS 20 N is a secondary plasticizer used
predominantly in the manufacture of nitrocellulose
wood lacquers. It improves the solvent release, the
sanding and stacking properties, particularly of
coatings which are force-dried in heating tunnels.
EDENOL® BS 20 N is generally used in combination
with a primary plasticizer such as DOP or DBP.
While the latter provides good flexibility,
EDENOL® BS 20 N gives an improvement of the
drying properties. The mixing ratio is dependent on
the formulation and will normally be as follows:
Primary plasticizer DOP (or DBP)
Secondary plasticizer EDENOL® BS 20 N
Mixing ratio 1:2 up to 1:3
Apart from combinations with DOP or DBP,
EDENOL® BS 20 N may often be used as the sole
plasticizer. In this case, its own elastifying properties
become effective, supported by a particularly good
compatibility with alkyd, maleic and urea resins.
When EDENOL® BS 20 N is applied in this manner,
its positive effect on the drying process is particularly
strong.
Acid-curing Finishes
Extensive tests have shown that EDENOL® BS 20 N
may be used advantageously in both pre-catalyzed
one-component and two-component acid-curing
finishes.
The use of EDENOL® BS 20 N in acid catalyzed
one-component wood lacquers results in an
improvement of the surface smoothness and the
«touch», while at the same time, the curing process
is supported by the special properties of the
plasticizer. The amount used is 10 - 20 %, calculated
on nitrocellulose and urea resin.
Similarly, an improvement of the surface properties,
the plastification and the drying properties has also
been noticed when using EDENOL® BS 20 N in
two-component acid-curing finishes. In our tests, an
addition of 10 - 20 % EDENOL® BS 20 N, calculated
on the non-plasticized solid urea resin, has proved
useful.
Miscellaneous The tendency of EDENOL® BS 20 N to exude is
markedly lower than that of butyl stearate. The
critical temperature of a lacquer film consisting of
approx. 60 % nitrocellulose and approx. 40 %
plasticizer is about 100 - 110 °C, and thus about
20% higher than in the case of butyl stearate being
used.
In coating varnishes EDENOL® BS 20 N improves
the smoothness, touch and scratch resistance of the
film surface.
Secondary plasticizer for lacquers. Butyl ester of a special fatty acid mixture. Not compatible with dimethyl glycol phtalate. Compatible with: nitrocellulose ester and alcohol soluble, dibutyl phthalate, dioctyl phthalate, blown castor oil, tricresyl phosphate, short-oil non-drying alkyds and short-oil drying alkyds, medium oil drying alkyds, ester gums, maleic acid modified ester gums melting points 90 - 105 °C and 120 - 140 °C, ketone resins, ketone formaldehyde resins, non-plasticized urea resins, non-plasticized melamine resins.
Used for wood and furniture coatings based on nitrocellulose, as well as acid-curing one and two-component finishes; paper varnishes, leather finishes. Ensures a very fast solvent release, as well as an improvement in sanding and stacking properties. Improves the «surface touch» and scratch resistance. May be used advantageously in both pre-catalyzed one-component and two-component acid-curing finishes. In coating varnishes this additive improves the smoothness, touch and scratch resistance of the film surface.
