Use Bi-functional special plasticizer for lacquers.
Composition Phthalic ester of mixed alcohols.
EDENOL® LFW 104 is a bi-functional special
plasticizer which, in nitrocellulose lacquers,
combines in itself the properties of a primary and a
secondary plasticizer. Therefore, EDENOL® LFW
104 can substitute the combination of primary
plasticizer/fatty acid ester generally used in lacquer
formulations. The advantage is that the component
which acts as a secondary plasticizer in
EDENOL® LFW 104, cannot separate from the film
compound, as it is chemically bound to the primary
plasticizer.
Furthermore, certain side effects which frequently
occur when using plasticizer mixtures, such as
slowing of the drying process and the decrease of
blocking resistance by the primary plasticizer, or the
limited compatibility of the secondary plasticizer, are
avoided by using EDENOL® LFW 104.

Application The most important field of application for
EDENOL® LFW 104 is nitrocellulose clear lacquers
for coating of paper and wood. Especially in furniture
lacquers which are applied in thick layers
EDENOL® LFW 104 has proved to give excellent
results with regard to fast solvent release and
elasticity. In nitrocellulose paper varnishes,
EDENOL® LFW 104 improves the rub and blocking
resistance. The elasticity achievable is so good that
use of additional primary plasticizers is not
necessary.
Besides its compatibility with more strongly polar
components such as ketone-aldehyde resins,
EDENOL® LFW 104 can be readily used in
combination with alkyd/maleic and urea resins.
Please note, however, that in nitrocellulose/urea
resin lacquers containing acid catalysts, the
compatibility of the plasticizer decreases as the
curing of the amine resin advances. As the film may
thus become cloudy, preliminary trials are
recommended.
At room temperature, EDENOL® LFW 104 does not
have a sufficiently strong solvent power for
nitrocellulose. It is only at higher temperatures
(about 70 °C) that the plasticizer shows its
gelatinizing properties.
The combination of EDENOL® LFW 104 with a
standard primary plasticizer with stronger gelatizing
properties does not produce any advantage. On the
contrary, this may adversely affect the typical
properties of EDENOL® LFW 104 and result in a
slow down of solvent release and a decrease in
blocking resistance.

Avoides slowing of the drying process and the decrease of blocking resistance by the primary plasticizer, or the limited compatibility of the secondary plasticizer. Insoluble in methyl glycol, methanol. Slightly soluble in ethanol. Incompatible with dimethyl glycol phthalate, ketone formaldehyde resins, plasticized urea resins.
