Compared with rosin esters derived from glycerol, this PE ester is a larger molecule and has about a 20°C higher softening point and greater heat stability. When adducted to obtain still higher softening point resins, lesser amounts of modifying agents are required to yield a resin of equivalent softening point. Uses for PENTALYN A synthetic resin include protective coating vehicles, adhesives, and printing inks. Hard, resinous; high refractive index; good stability to heat, light, and moisture; wide solvency; low solution viscosities; excellent gloss; excellent pigment wetting properties. Compatible in practically useful proportions, with raw, cooked, and blown drying oils; alkyd resins; ester type and hydrocarbon waxes; natural, synthetic, chlorinated rubber and reclaimed rubbers. Limited compatibility with nitrocellulose and ethylcellulose. Incompatible with cellulose acetate. Hard, pale, thermoplastic pentaerythritol (PE) ester of refined rosin. Used in protective coating vehicles and printing inks. Offers high softening point and refractive index, good stability to heat, light, and moisture, wide solvency, low solution viscosity and very good gloss and pigment wetting properties. Gives compatibility with raw, cooked, and blown drying oils, alkyd resins, ester type and hydrocarbon waxes, natural, synthetic, chlorinated rubber and reclaimed rubbers.
