The primary blocking mechanism employed by HALOX® for tannin stain inhibition is one of chelation (or precipitation). This chelation process is essentially the reaction of soluble metal cations from the pigment with phenol groups in the tannins. One of the major controlling factors in this reaction is the pH of the dry paint film. The pH of the dry paint film should be distinctly basic in nature (>8.0). At this basic pH, the phenol groups will react with the available metal cations. The pH of the dry paint film does not seem to have a measurable effect on the solubility of the tannins, but does control their reactivity. Because of this pH factor, we suggest that the paint be buffered through the use of high pH extenders. We have found that pigments such as platy talcs and calcium carbonate perform adequately for this application. The platy talc appears to perform best - probably due to the fact that it helps to lower the vapor transmission rate through the paint film. Tannin Stain Inhibiting Pigments and Additives HALOX ® XTAIN ® L-66 is a strong ionic, alkaline-base liquid tannin stain inhibitor for use in water-base coatings for wood. The unique chemical composition of XTAIN ® L-66 provides excellent tannin stain blocking properties but also demands the utilization of specific formulating techniques for obtaining success. Typical loading levels for HALOX XTAIN ® L-66 are 2-3% based on total formula weight. The unique chemistry of this product allows performance to be obtained regardless of the PVC of the formulation. Polymer choice will dictate best perfor-mance within a given PVC range. XTAIN ® L-66 Liquid Ease of Incorporation Highly Efficient/Cost Effective Lower Cost No Odor May reduce or eliminate high odor amines in formulations Reduces need for zinc oxide Versatile Can post add to finished products under good agitation May contribute to Rheology Acrylic Latexes Vinyl Acrylic Latexes Styrenated Acrylic Latexes Versatile, odorless, sstrong ionic, alkaline-base liquid tannin stain inhibitor for water-base coatings for wood. Used in acrylic, vinyl acrylic and styrenated acrylic latexes for paint and coatings. Provides very good tannin stain blocking properties, ease of incorporation high efficiency. Reduces high odor amines and need for zinc oxide. Can contribute to rheology. Use level: 2-3% by total formula weight.
