Albiflex is the overall trade name for a family of copolymers built up of epoxy and silicone segments.
This product group combines two normally incompatible polymer types, epoxy and silicone, into a homogenous copolymer that combines the positive characteristics of both starting polymers and can be used as a base resin as well as an additive.
From epoxy resin come outstanding adhesion on very many substrates, high mechanical strength and good chemical resistance.
From silicone come high elasticity even at low temperature, good aging resistance and excellent dielectrical properties.
Base polymer for formulating elastic adhesives and sealants, potting compounds, coatings and similar products
Additive for elastification of conventional, brittle epoxy resins
Albiflex base polymers
Otherwise unmodified epoxy-silicone copolymers are sold under the trade name Albiflex followed by a 3 or 4-digit number as base polymers for formulating adhesives and sealing compounds, casting resins and coatings. All Albiflex base polymers have epoxy end groups (except for Albiflex 712 with acrylic end groups), are fluid at room temperature, and therefore work and cure largely similar to epoxy resins. In particular, almost all epoxy hardeners can be used, such as aliphatic and cycloaliphatic amines, poyaminoamides, acid anhydrides, dicyandiamide and catalytic hardeners such as tertiary amines, imidazoles, BF3 complexes etc. Aromatic hardeners can only be used to a limited extent.
Cured Albiflex base polymers result in products with elastomer character whose mechanical and thermal properties are greatly dependent on the type of hardener and Albiflex used. Final hardnesses between Shore A 30 and D 90 are possible. Basically, the hardener influences the property set of the final product in the same way as for normal epoxy resins, i.e.
Reactivity with aliphatic amines
Good weather resistance with cycloaliphatic amines
Flexibility through longer-chain polyaminoamides or ether diamines
Good electrical values with cycloaliphatic acid anhydrides
Latently curable systems with dicyandiamide or imidazoles
Albiflex base polymers are miscible, for example with cycloaliphatic epoxy resins and aliphatic diglycidyl ethers. It is important to note that unlike conventional epoxy resins, the optimum mechanical properties as a rule are obtained with higher hardener quantities than the theoretical concentration calculated from the equivalent weights of Albiflex base polymer and hardener. Final products with higher hardnesses (and strengths) can be achieved with the appropriate formulations.
Epoxy-silicone copolymer, based on phenol resin. Used as a base resin for formulating elastic coatings. Can be used as an additive for elastification of conventional, brittle epoxy resins. Provides outstanding adhesion on very many substrates, high mechanical strength, good chemical resistance, high elasticity even at low temperature, good aging resistance and very good dielectrical properties. Can be used with almost all epoxy hardeners such as aliphatic and cycloaliphatic amines, poyaminoamides, acid anhydrides, dicyandiamide and catalytic hardeners such as tertiary amines, imidazoles and BF3 complexes. Offers reactivity with aliphatic amines, good weather resistance with cycloaliphatic amines, flexibility through longer-chain polyaminoamides or ether diamines and good electrical values with cycloaliphatic acid anhydrides.
