GANTREZ® AN (Methylvinylether/Maleic anhydride) Copolymers
Coatings/digital printing and imaging
GANTREZ® AN Resins are linear, alternating copolymers made by a charge transfer complex reaction of methylvinylether and maleic anhydride. The fundamental character of these polymerizations requires that a maleic anhydride unit must be adjacent to a methylvinylether unit and vice versa. The Table shown lists the five available commercial grades af GANTREZ® AN in the molecular weight range of 190,000 to 2,000,000. The polymers are white, hygroscopic powders soluble in Tetrahydrofuran and M-PYROL®; insoluble in aliphatic, aromatic and halogenated hydrocarbons. All five grades cited below, have a glass transition temperature of 151-154°C, independent of molecular weight and form transparent, tack-free films.
Reaction of the anhydride functional group with essentially any molecule having an "active hydrogen" opens a wealth of opportunities to synthesize useful derivatives. A number of such products and their applications are cited below.
The anhydride function of GANTREZ® AN hydrolyzes in water to a clear solution of polymer having repeat alternating co-maleic acid units. The polycarboxylic acid derivatives with a pH of ~2 at 5% concentration are available either as viscous solutions or white powders designated; GANTREZ® S95 and S97, low and high molecular weight resins. The vicinal dicarboxylic acid functionality of these materials is useful in a number of applications. Also available are commercial ethyl, isopropyl and n-butyl half ester grades of GANTREZ® ES.
